Breaking the Cycle of Renting and Building a Legacy
Meet Tupou Kainga, a Sydney-based social worker who joined TMAP in June 2018. Originally from New Zealand, Tupou and her husband migrated to Australia in 2015, settling in Mount Druitt, Sydney. Like many Kiwi families, they came for opportunity but quickly found themselves stuck in the cycle of renting, with little progress toward owning a home.
“I’ve come from a family of renting for many years, and having my own little family, I wanted to break that cycle and look at buying a house, which I thought I would never do — but I did.” – Tupou Kainga
The Turning Point
Tupou first discovered TMAP through a Facebook ad in 2017. She and her husband attended a summit in Liverpool, but she admits she was sceptical at first. It wasn’t until returning for a second summit in June 2018 that the decision was made to join.
Not long after, the couple settled on their first property in November 2018, just months before Tupou gave birth. As she puts it, “the house is the same age as my child.”
The journey wasn’t without challenges. Pregnancy, family health issues in New Zealand, and a couple of years of being off track tested their resolve. But the commitment to a better future for their three children kept them moving forward.
Strategies That Worked
Tupou’s journey is a textbook example of the TMAP-2-STEP strategy:
- Step 1: OPM (Other People’s Money) – By leveraging the First Home Owner Grant alongside their savings, Tupou and her husband secured their first home.
- Step 2: Equity – After five years, they tapped into the equity from that first property to purchase their second property in Perth.
Before TMAP, Tupou had never even heard the word equity. She says, “I did not know what equity was until I spoke to Massey about it. I never knew there was money being made on top of your house that you could use to purchase another home instead of having to come up with that money yourself.”
Playing the Long Game
For Tupou, the journey has been about patience, perseverance, and playing the long game. Seven years on from her first TMAP summit, she’s now looking ahead to Property #3, this time using her super to continue building wealth.
Her motivation is clear: “We have kids now and we want to make a difference for their future as well.”
Final Word
Tupou’s story is proof that even with doubts, setbacks, and challenges, families can break the cycle of renting and build real wealth through property. By applying TMAP strategies step by step, she turned scepticism into action and is now building a legacy for her children.
